We are brother and sister team, Emma and Howard Spence.
Howard is eldest by 3 years and from our teens we have always been close.
A year and half ago we inherited a sum of money, as with all inheritances the surrounding circumstances were sad, however in this case, they were particularly tragic. Determined to stay positive we decided to use the money to fund a family business and turn something negative into something positive.
We’ve always been foodies and love cooking and have held many dinner parties and family meals where we take over the kitchen, glass of wine in hand and happily cook up a storm.
Food is a mad passion of ours, buying good food, cooking good food and most importantly eating good food. Being keen cyclists, café stops and cycling go hand in hand. Having visited so many over the years we knew what people wanted but also knew we could do better than most.
Instantly we planned to turn the business into a café with a shop attached however after taking some advice we were advised to take it slowly and run the shop as a going concern for a little while.
In hindsight that was the best piece of advice we took, we needed to let the ideas for the business develop organically, we needed to get to know the area and our clientele and potential new clientele, we needed to learn how to run a business, we needed to make mistakes and learn from them and we have spent the last year talking to each and everyone of our customers about our plans and gaining essential feedback.
We cleaned up the shop, stopped paper deliveries and then started to add in a few locally sourced products. We didn’t know how these would sell, as they were not traditional ‘convenience store’ products, but to our delight they really took off. Customers loved the fact they were local, they were traceable and they didn’t have thousands of supplementary airmiles.
These products all had a story attached them, they were made by local small batch producers, who were passionate about food, many had given up well paid city jobs to pursue their dreams of making good quality food.
As we entered 2019, we now had a clear focus as to what we wanted to be and where we wanted to go with the business and it was totally different to our original idea. Thank goodness we didn’t rush into big changes overnight!
